Stout, colored threads then wrap around the wire concealing it. I introduced myself to the Broom Lady as I walked up to where three finished brooms were propped against a complicated piece of machinery, a 144-year old broom winder that binds straw to the handle with steel wire. Eye-catching brooms result, and so does a nickname.įolks in these parts refer to Susan as the Broom Lady. Bound bunches of colored straw lay across a table waiting its turn. She dyes the wheat-colored straw in rainbow colors. Her steady hands unite straw from Texas, wire from who knows where, and wooden handles, along with colorful thread and yarn and handsome brooms result. Susan’s work area is a place where things happen. Handsome dark broom handles stand in two black metal garbage cans, paint flecked and dented from use. The round bales are pretty in and of themselves. Surrounded by the sweet smell of straw Susan uses vintage 1800’s equipment to make brooms the old-fashioned way and what brooms they are. Broomstraw littered the floor bringing to mind a barn where some animal dines on a meal of hay. I walked into the house (1740) in this community on the National Register of Historic Places. The owner and broom maker, Susan Simpson, sat just beyond an open window, sipping a Pepsi and eating a mid-afternoon lunch, an inviting sandwich. I pulled into a sandy parking lot and a sign on an obviously old building said, Hand-Made Brooms. That’s when an amazing coincidence took place. I detoured through the hamlet of Boykin to see the gristmill there. I was preparing for a two-day trip to Pawleys Island for book-signing events. I don’t know that anyone would have paid for such a broom, but it met a real need and it didn’t come from China.īy Wednesday I’d forgotten about hand-made brooms. She’d grab a broom and a few whisks would send unwanted material out the door. That’s all it took, along with passed-down know-how. I bet it’s been a while (never for some), since you saw one of those hand-made brooms in this era of mass-manufactured nylon brooms. They were attractive in a rustic way, amber shocks of broomstraw bunched tightly in place by inner tube strips. I’d go to her home in and over in a corner would be a handmade broom about a yard long. Then I remembered the brooms my Grandmother Poland made. Name one person you know who can make an ordinary, useful thing. The political debater’s words came to me. ![]() Occasionally, data from several studies have been analyzed by the same method, and this has helped to illuminate similarities and differences in response among 224Ra, 226Ra, and 228Ra. The presentation and analysis of quantitative data vary from study to study, making precise intercomparisons difficult. Whether these effects magnify other skeletal problems is unknown, but issues such as these leave the threshold-nonthreshold question open to further investigation.Ĭurrent efforts focus on the determination of risk, as a function of time and exposure, with emphasis on the low exposure levels where there is the greatest quantitative uncertainty. There is evidence that 226,228Ra effects on bone occur at the histological level for doses near the limit of detectability. Low-level endpoints have not been examined with the same thoroughness as cancer. For nonstochastic effects, apparent threshold doses vary with health endpoint. Practical limitations imposed by statistical variation in the outcome of experiments make the threshold-nonthreshold issue for cancer essentially unresolvable by scientific study. The issue remains unresolved, but as a matter of philosophy, it is now commonly assumed that the so-called stochastic effects, cancer and genetic effects, are nonthreshold phenomena and that the so-called nonstochastic effects are threshold phenomena. The question remained open, however, whether the health effects were threshold phenomena that would not occur below certain exposure or dose levels, or whether the risk would continue at some nonzero level until the exposure was removed altogether. These limits on radium intake or body content were designed to reduce the incidence of the then-known health effects to a level of insignificance. ![]() ![]() Shortly thereafter, experimental animal studies and the analysis of case reports on human effects focused on the determination of tolerance doses and radiation protection guides for the control of workplace exposure. This change occurred in 1925–1926 following reports and intensive discussion of short-term health effects such as ''radium jaw" in some dial painters. The first widespread effort to control accidental radium exposure was the abandonment of the technique of using the mouth to tip the paint-laden brushes used for application of luminous material containing 226Ra and sometimes 228Ra to the often small numerals on watch dials. As the practical concerns of radiation protection have shifted and knowledge has accumulated, there has been an evolution in the design and objectives of experimental animal studies and in the methods of collection, analysis, and presentation of human health effects data. Before concern developed over environmental exposure, attention was devoted primarily to exposure in the workplace, where the potential exists for the accidental uptake of radium at levels known to be harmful to a significant fraction of exposed individuals. The purpose of this chapter is to review the information on cancer induced by these three isotopes in humans and estimate the risks associated with their internal deposition.Īll members of the world's population are presumably at risk, because each absorbs radium from food and water as a working hypothesis, radiation is assumed to be carcinogenic even at the lowest dose levels, although there is no unequivocal evidence to support this hypothesis. Later, similar effects were also found to be associated with internal exposure to 224Ra. These studies were motivated by the discovery of cancer and other debilitating effects associated with internal exposure to 226Ra and 228Ra. ![]() The primary sources of information on the health effects and dosimetry of radium isotopes come from extensive studies of 224Ra, 226Ra, and 228Ra in humans and experimental animals. It has also been used for internal radiation therapy. Radium has been used commercially in luminous paints for watch and instrument dials and for other luminized objects. In communities where wells are used, drinking water can be an important source of ingested radium. Radium is present in soil, minerals, foodstuffs, groundwater, and many common materials, including many used in construction. Four isotopes of radium occur naturally and several more are man-made or are decay products of man-made isotopes. ![]() ![]() ![]() Kids will enjoy the simple action and cute characters. Too often Kitty games miss this nuance, but Happiness Parade gets it. ![]() Of course, Hello Kitty is an all-ages kind of mascot, and the Kitty games do tend to skew to the younger end of the demographics in terms of who they target, but the great secret about “entertainment for kids” is that it’s most successful when adults can also enjoy it. On the side of the “road”, crowds cheer the mascots on, and while the enemies and traps are very simple, they are also bright and happy, and add to the colour of the experience. The world pops with disco-style colour and energy as the characters parade their way down the roads. There are some odd choices, such as why the eternally-popular Cinnomoroll isn’t present, and, personally, I am deeply disappointed that Pekkle the duck isn’t a playable character, but across the cast that is there, there’s enough that one of your favourites probably shows up. The great thing abou t Hello Kitty Happiness Parade is how charming it all is. ![]() These little sequences do behave like more classical rhythm games, and are very amusing as the character struts their stuff. The goal is to get to the final leg of the journey and complete it without losing all three characters, with damage and KOed characters carrying over from one level to the next.įinally, at certain points in each level, there are what can only be called disco dancing sequences, which involve one of your characters hitting cool dance poses for a couple of seconds. Pass it and you get taken to a world map where you can choose the next stage. You start with three characters on the first level, with each level being one piece of music. These range from the relatively mild fences (hit one and your character takes a bit of damage), to a swinging hammer (if it hits your character it’s an instant knockout). While you’re concentrating on keeping in perfect time with the beat, there’s also a series of obstacles that will be dropped in front of you. You can move from one lane to the next at the allocated beat, but you do need to maintain the beat in perfect sync. Your job is to time each “step” on that road that the character takes in time with the music’s beat. To break it down, in Hello Kitty Happiness Parade there are a number of “lanes” arranged like a road. ![]() Hello Kitty and Friends Happiness Parade is less of a rhythm game, since it doesn’t emulate the experience of interacting with music, as it is a metronome game, featuring none of the performative qualities that rhythm games aspire to. With that as the foundation, you then put performative qualities – such as rhythm – over the top. When you use a metronome while playing music it helps to help you keep in time. If you have, you surely know what a metronome is – a useful tool that keeps a mechanical beat. Not if you’ve ever actually played a musical instrument seriously. It’s going to be written up as a “rhythm game,” but it’s not really. That’s a pity, because Hello Kitty and Friends Happiness Parade is actually a pretty decent thing, worth spending some time with, for anyone that enjoys cute things and uncomplicated charm.
